She has made key breakthroughs on the identification of various bacterial virulence factors and the strategies by which pathogens enter, survive and spread in cells and tissues of the human host. Using Listeria as model, she has elucidated many of the mechanisms used by pathogens to subvert and exploit the functions of the infected host. Her outstanding work has served as a model for others in the field of cellular microbiology, which she pioneered.
