Citation | Jas Pal Badyal has pioneered the functionalization of solid surfaces and deposition of functional nanolayers using non-isothermal plasmachemical techniques. He has pushed forward the frontiers of the field beyond its classical boundaries of poor structural definition / chemical selectivity leading to many distinct advantages compared to conventional wet surface functionalization methods. The following aspects of his work distinguish him as a world leader of this field: (i) development of the first theory which rationally predicts the surface functionalization of polymer surfaces by electrical gas discharges; and (ii) plasmachemical deposition of structurally well-defined ultrathin functional films. The underpinning fundamental research has been successfully exploited by 3 start-up companies and includes the protection of over 100 million electronic devices. |
