DescriptionCertificate of Election
CitationIan Graham is a recognised world leader in the field of plant metabolism. He has made major contributions to our understanding of metabolic signalling, the control of seed oil mobilisations and the regulation of seed germination in the model plant Asabidopsis. He also leads a number of high impact strategic projects focused on novel crop improvement. Major advances underpinning this effort include the first genetic map of Artemisia annua which produces the antimalarial compound artemisinin and the discovery of a ten gene cluster and biochemical pathway for the production of noscapine, an anti-tumour alkaloid produced in Papaver somniferum (opium poppy).
