Title | Cerundolo, Vincenzo: certificate of election to the Royal Society |
Date | 9 May 2018 |
Description | Certificate endorsing election of Vincenzo Cerundolo as a Fellow of the Royal Society, including personal details of the elected Fellow and citing the reasons for election and names of proposers. Signed by Executive Director of the Royal Society, Julie Maxton. |
Citation | Vincenzo Cerundolo is distinguished for his discoveries in processing and presentation of peptides and lipids to T cells and in clarifying structural and kinetic mechanisms for lipid loading onto CD1 molecules. He was first to demonstrate that genes within the major histocompatibility complex (MHC) generate peptides presented by MHC class I molecules, to characterise the mechanisms by which lipids bind to MHC-like CD1 molecules, and to show that harnessing CD1d restricted invariant NKT cells enhances antigen specific antibody and T cell responses. These seminal findings have opened up novel therapeutic strategies to enhance immune responses against cancer and infectious pathogens. |
