TitleCostello, Kevin Joseph: certificate of election to the Royal Society
Date9 May 2018
DescriptionCertificate endorsing election of Kevin Costello as a Fellow of the Royal Society, including personal details of the elected Fellow and citing the reasons for election and names of proposers. Signed by Executive Director of the Royal Society, Julie Maxton.
CitationOver the last 30 years, the vigorous interaction between theoretical physics (particularly string theory) and pure
mathematics has led to many completely unexpected predictions about geometry. But the proofs since found for
these predictions have rarely used the original insights from physics. Bridging the very different cultures and
techniques of the two fields appeared insurmountable until the work of Costello. He has realised a 50-year-old dream of a mathematically precise formulation of quantum field theory, and invented new (and mathematically rigorous) physics himself. Important applications are now emerging, for instance to integrable systems, mirror symmetry, and other areas of mathematics.
