CitationPeter Dayan is a world-leading theoretical and computational neuroscientist. He has made important contributions to many areas of research including computational psychiatry and most importantly to Reinforcement Learning (RL), the study of artificial and natural systems for maximizing rewards and minimizing punishments. He showed that dopamine neurons signal a prediction error for future reward, inspiring extensive work into prediction error learning in appetitive and aversive settings. He was director of the Gatsby Computational Neuroscience Unit from 2002 until October 2017, guiding one of the premier institutions in theoretical neuroscience and machine learning, and training many future leaders in the field.
