TitleHannon, Gregory James: certificate of election to the Royal Society
Date9 May 2018
DescriptionCertificate endorsing election of Greg Hannon as a Fellow of the Royal Society, including personal details of the elected Fellow and citing the reasons for election and names of proposers. Signed off by the Executive Director of the Royal Society, Julie Maxton.
CitationGreg Hannon pioneered our understanding of the mechanism of RNAi, including the discovery of Dicer and RISC, and how they function. He established the importance of RNAi to many biological phenomena, including cancer. His lab identified an abundant class of small RNAs (termed piRNAs) that interact with germline-specific Piwi-RISC. This led to the discovery that piRNAs form an elegant innate immune system that distinguishes genes (self) from transposons (non-self) and guards germ cells against active mobile elements. He also developed a number of techniques, including short hairpin RNAs, oligonucleotide library production by in situ synthesis and exon capture, which have revolutionised our ability to study gene function.
