Citation | Tullio Pozzan is one of the world's leading cell biologists. Together with the late Roger Tsien, he developed the then revolutionary technique for fluorescence measurements of cytosolic Ca2+ in living cells. Later, he pioneered the genetic approach to measuring Ca2+ fluctuations in the mitochondria of living cells, using the Ca2+ sensitive photoprotein aequorin targeted to the organelle. This lead to a break-through in understanding how mitochondria participate in cellular regulation by acting as Ca2+ sensors in micro-domains of high cytosolic Ca2+ concentration. He was also the first to demonstrate expression of GFP in mammalian cells targeted to intracellular organelles. |
