Citation | Salim Abdool Karim is the founding Director of the Centre for the AIDS Programme of Research in South Africa (CAPRISA) and Pro-Vice-Chancellor (Research) at the University of KwaZulu-Natal, South Africa. He has made major innovative contributions that have impacted the epidemiology, transmission and prevention of HIV/AIDS, especially in South Africa, the worst-affected country in the world. He pioneered the application of vaginal microbicides against HIV and treatment of HIV-TB co-infection. He was President of the South African Medical Research Council, increasing its impact and productivity during his tenure. One of Africa’s great scientists, he received Africa’s highest honour for science. |
