Date | 28 March 2019 |
Description | Certificate endorsing election of James Briscoe as a Fellow of the Royal Society, including personal details of the elected Fellow and citing the reasons for election and names of proposers. Signed by the Executive Director of the Royal Society, Julie Maxton. |
Citation | James Briscoe has made significant contributions to solving long-standing problems in developmental biology. His studies of vertebrate central nervous system development offer new insight into how cell types are specified and embryonic tissues patterned. This has led to a revision to the morphogen concept, a key developmental biology theory, and revealed fundamental molecular principles underpinning tissue development. His approach combines scholarly knowledge of embryology with interdisciplinary approaches that incorporate molecular and cellular biology, mathematical modelling and systems biology. His work has spurred many others into taking quantitative and interdisciplinary approaches to address developmental biology questions. |
