TitleCarpenter, Lucy Jane: certificate of election to the Royal Society
Date28 March 2019
DescriptionCertificate endorsing election of Lucy Carpenter as a Fellow of the Royal Society, including personal details of the elected Fellow and citing the reasons for election and names of proposers. Signed by the Executive Director of the Royal Society, Julie Maxton.
CitationProfessor Lucy Carpenter is an internationally recognised atmospheric chemist. Her research focusses on the role halogens play in many aspects of the chemistry of the troposphere and the stratosphere. By using a combination of field measurements, laboratory experimentation and modelling she has shown how marine biogenic and inorganic sources of iodine generate iodine oxide radicals in the marine boundary layer, which in turn catalyse the destruction of tropospheric ozone. Further, her fundamental work on the atmospheric chemistry of bromine and its role in the breakdown of ozone in the stratosphere is vital for global policy to repair the ozone hole. Her award of prestigious prizes by the Royal Society, the Leverhulme Trust and the Royal Society of Chemistry attest to the excellence and groundbreaking nature of her research.
