CitationGeorge Davey-Smith, professor of clinical epidemiology at Bristol, is recognised internationally for the integration of genetics with observational human studies. He was among the first to use information on common genetic variants to investigate whether relationships between various factors and disease were causal, coining "Mendelian randomisation" to describe such studies. Davey-Smith has made major contributions to epidemiology, developing meta-analytic techniques and linking socioeconomic inequalities with health outcomes. He leads the Avon Longitudinal Study (ALSPAC), the Bristol-based birth cohort that has shared data with other scientists throughout the world leading to over 1200 research papers in the broader community.
