CitationBernard Fanaroff is a radio astronomer, renowned for his discovery of the Fanaroff-Riley classification of extragalactic radio sources. After his PhD, he returned to South Africa and played a central role in the transition from apartheid to democracy, becoming Deputy Director General of the Office of President Nelson Mandela. He returned to radio astronomy with the vision of making science a vehicle for technology development and equality in Africa. He became the leading figure in the Square Kilometre Array (South Africa) Radio Telescope Project and successfully persuaded the South African government and many other countries in Africa to support its development. He was responsible for the construction of the precursor array MeerKAT, which has been built on budget and is now performing well beyond specification.
