TitleHurles, Matthew Edward: certificate of election to the Royal Society
Date28 March 2019
DescriptionCertificate endorsing election of Matthew Hurles as a Fellow of the Royal Society, including personal details of the elected Fellow and citing the reasons for election and names of proposers. Signed by the Executive Director of the Royal Society, Julie Maxton.
CitationMatthew Hurles is Senior Group Leader of Human Genetics at Wellcome Trust Sanger Institute. He is a highly innovative scientist in the field of population and medical genetics, and a pioneer of understanding the causes and consequences of new mutations that arise from one generation to the next. His fundamental research characterising structural variation in the human genome has led to a reappraisal of the biological impact of this form of genetic variation. He leads the Deciphering Developmental Disorders study investigating the genetic causes of disease in 13,000 families with children with undiagnosed developmental disorders. This ground-breaking study has been highly successful: characterising the genetic architecture and genomic landscape of these diverse conditions, discovering tens of novel disorders and providing thousands of diagnoses for children and families, whilst developing processes and tools to catalyse adoption by the NHS. The Deciphering Developmental Disorders program has been so effective it became the template for the transformation of diagnostic testing for rare diseases in the NHS, led by Genomics England.
