TitleKay, Steve Anthony: certificate of election to the Royal Society
Date28 March 2019
DescriptionCertificate endorsing election of Steve Anthony Kay as a Fellow of the Royal Society, including personal details of the elected Fellow and citing the reasons for election and names of proposers. Signed by the Executive Director of the Royal Society, Julie Maxton.
CitationKay has made a continuous series of seminal discoveries in plants and animals regarding the biological clocks that control 24-hour, circadian rhythms. He discovered the first clock mutants in higher plants, identified many clock genes, and mapped the regulatory networks that underlie the clock mechanism. After demonstrating extensive rhythmic control across the genome, he showed how clock networks orchestrate environmental adaptations, from seedling growth to seasonal flowering. In flies and mammals, he demonstrated a mechanism for negative feedback of the core clock. He discovered how the clock regulates key metabolic pathways and identified small molecules that modulate human clock proteins, to develop as experimental therapeutics.
