Title | Parekh, Anant Bhikhu: certificate of election to the Royal Society |
Date | 28 March 2019 |
Description | Certificate endorsing election of Anant Parekh as a Fellow of the Royal Society, including personal details of the elected Fellow and citing the reasons for election and names of proposers. Signed by the Executive Director of the Royal Society, Julie Maxton. |
Citation | Parekh is noted for two major discoveries in the field of calcium signalling. The first is that mitochondria control the activity of store-operated calcium (CRAC) channels, thus contributing to the regulation of calcium entry. The second is his exploration of the way spatially restricted microdomains of calcium, near CRAC channels, activate cellular secretion and gene expression. These include an examination of the way a paracrine secretion sustains mast cell activation, leading to a potential new therapy for allergic conditions, and new insights into excitation-transcription coupling. |
