Title | Sphicas, Paraskevas: certificate of election to the Royal Society |
Date | 28 March 2019 |
Description | Certificate endorsing election of Paraskevas Sphicas as a Fellow of the Royal Society, including personal details of the elected Fellow and citing the reasons for election and names of proposers. Signed by the Executive Director of the Royal Society, Julie Maxton. |
Citation | Paraskevas Sphicas is a leading figure in the search for physics beyond the standard model at CERN's LHC. He defined and implemented the preparations for extracting physics from the CMS experiment. He played a seminal role in preparing CMS for the discovery of the Higgs boson and has been driving searches for supersymmetry. In his prior work on the UA1 and CDF experiments he made several first measurements on the production of heavy quarks (b and top), including the observation of the top quark, and the first measurement of a fundamental charge-parity parameter (sin2ß) in a hadron collider experiment. |
