CitationDoug Turnbull is a clinical academic who has made a major scientific contribution to understanding the role of mitochondria in health and disease. His studies have explored biochemical and genetic mechanisms of disease, and he has shown that mitochondrial DNA mutations play a critical role in normal human ageing and in age related disease. He has built on these scientific discoveries to develop a world class clinical service for patients with mitochondrial disease and has led the scientific development of a novel method to prevent the transmission of mitochondrial DNA disease (Mitochondrial Donation).
