CitationBarry Barish has made major contributions across a wide range of fundamental physics. His pioneering experiments using neutrinos were vital in establishing the quark substructure of the nucleon and weak neutral currents. He set the best limits on magnetic-monopole density in the Universe, ruling these out as major contributors to dark matter. He led the LIGO gravitational wave project, initiating the plans for its upgrade to Advanced LIGO, and was director of the design effort for the International Linear Collider. His leading role in LIGO's detection of gravitational wave signals resulted in his sharing the Nobel Prize for Physics 2017.
