TitleClevers, Hans: certificate of election to the Royal Society
Date28 March 2019
DescriptionCertificate endorsing election of Hans Clevers as a Foreign Member of the Royal Society, including personal details of the elected Foreign Member and citing the reasons for election and names of proposers. Signed by the Executive Director of the Royal Society, Julie Maxton.
CitationClevers uncovered how Wnt signals control gene expression during animal embryogenesis. Looking beyond embryogenesis, he unveiled the role of Wnt signaling in colon cancer and in its physiological counterpart, the selfrenewing gut epithelium. Combining these insights, he discovered the generic marker gene Lgr5, which identified stem cells in virtually all mammalian organs. He devised protocols to expand these stem cells indefinitely as organoids, thereby pioneering the use of mini-organs that recapitulate healthy or diseased human tissue in a dish. Organoids are now widely used in basic and applied biomedicine, occupying a niche between 'classical' 2D cell lines and experimental animals.
