Citation | Keith Matthews has employed innovative strategies to provide exceptional insight into the developmental biology of African trypanosomes causing human sleeping sickness and the livestock disease 'nagana' . He has discovered how these parasites use quorum sensing to undergo life-cycle development in preparation for transmission, control their infection dynamics to optimise disease spread and differentiate upon uptake by their tsetse fly vector. His insights into trypanosome life-cycle control and gene regulation have been highly influential for understanding the transmission biology of the parasite, have provided novel drug development opportunities and allow the epidemiological prediction of parasite virulence and transmission potential. |
