Citation | Frances Arnold is distinguished for her development of directed evolution. The concept behind this process is to improve existing protein or enzyme function as well as to engineer new functionality. Through a series of methodological advances Frances distilled this concept into practice, resulting in significant enhancement of chemical synthesis and biotechnology procedures. The directed evolution techniques she pioneered now influence numerous industries, including pharmaceutical, medical, energy and defence. Overall, therefore, Frances' research has enabled creation of new products and more efficient, cost-effective and cleaner production of established products, with reduced environmental impact. |
