| Citation | Professor Kerry Emanuel has made fundamental contributions to our understanding of moist convection in the atmosphere and its role in the global climate system; his monograph on atmospheric convection is the definitive work on the subject. Professor Emanuel is the world expert on the dynamics and thermodynamics of tropical cyclones: their internal structure and their role in the large-scale environment. He has shown that power dissipation by tropical cyclones closely tracks underlying sea surface temperature. This important work has helped improve our understanding of an especially challenging aspect of anthropogenic climate change: its impact on severe weather. |
