Title | Shipsey, Ian: certificate of election to the Royal Society |
Date | 21 April 2022 |
Description | Certificate endorsing election of Ian Shipsey as a Fellow of the Royal Society. Includes personal details of the elected Fellow, citation giving the reasons for election, and names of proposers. Signed by the Executive Director of the Royal Society, Julie Maxton. |
Citation | Shipsey made the most precise measurement of four of the weak-interaction quark couplings with CLEO/CLEO-c, and demonstrated applicability of Lattice Quantum Chromodynamics calculations to heavy-quark decay, giving confidence to the extraction of four of the remaining five couplings. With CMS, he made the first measurement of b-quark production, found evidence for quark-gluon plasma in heavy-ion collisions, and a long-sought rare b-quark boundstate process. He constructed pioneering charged-particle-tracking silicon detectors for CLEO and CMS which enabled these measurements and many other important discoveries. With ATLAS, he found evidence that the Higgs field is the origin of the muon mass. |
