Citation | Barbara Maher is a world leader in environmental magnetism. Her work has demonstrated that ultrafine magnetic particles and their properties can be used as ‘tracers’ at all length scales, creating a powerful, new window on key environmental processes. She has spear-headed fundamental contributions to understanding fine-particle magnetism in contemporary and geological environmental materials - soils, sediments, aeolian dusts, and particulate air pollution. She pioneered the quantification of the links between nanomagnet formation in soils and Quaternary palaeoclimate (specifically, monsoonal rainfall). In a worldwide first, she led the team which recently discovered toxic, externally sourced magnetite and co-associated metal-bearing pollution nanoparticles in human brains; critically, identifying exposure to vehicle- and industry-derived, metal-rich nanoparticles as a potential environmental risk factor for neurodegenerative disease. |
