Citation | Graham Moore is distinguished for two ground-breaking contributions. He proposed and verified the Synteny concept, namely the conservation of gene order across genomes. This has transformed genome analysis in many organisms, particularly plants. Synteny has enabled gene cloning through comparative analysis, with major ramifications in cereal breeding. He exploited Synteny to identify and clone the wheat gene that regulates chromosome pairing in this polyploid. He then determined how its duplication from an ancestral gene during polyploidisation led to a novel phenotype combination, stabilising the polyploid and doubling grain number, with extraordinary value to agriculture and civilisation. |
