Description | File from the Royal Society International Geophysical Year expedition to Halley Bay.
Four handmade copies of Christmas edition of 'The Halley Comet', with colourful cover designs featuring snow flakes and a Christmas bell. The text of 'The Halley Comet' is decorated with snow.
The Halley Comet is a light-hearted staff journal created by the expedition team of the Royal Society's Antarctic Expedition at Halley Bay. This Christmas edition marks the departure of Colonel Robin Smart, the arrival of the ship Tottan, and the promotion of Joe MacDowell to expedition leader.
The journal also includes: a note from Colonel Smart; facts and figures about 'gashing' (washing up) and consumption of food; further statistics on numbers of messages sent and electricity used; a 'Christmas test [...] of your mental stability under Antarctic conditions'; and Christmas greetings received. |
