The Royal Society founded its Volcanological Research Committee following the 1961 volcanic eruption on Tristan da Cunha. Following the Tristan da Cunha eruption, the Society's (then) South Pacific Expeditions Committee sent an expedition to Tristan da Cunha with the support of the Royal Navy. The Volcanological Research Committee went on to develope a procedure for rapidly sending scientists to eruption sites, including Mount Etna, Italy.
