TitleLetter from E J H Corner, Ranau, North Borneo to George Hemmen, Royal Society
Date24 July 1961
DescriptionWrites that the majority of the expedition personnel are at basecamp while Askew is at camp 4. They are stranded for a few days while there is a festival at Ranau. Says that Askew is enjoying himself with the 'extraordinary' soil samples at 9000 - 10500 Ft. Breifly discusses filming on the mountain and updates Hemmen on the groups acitvities including the work of Harrison and Ben Ensol [zoologists]. Updates also cover every day life on the expedition including how difficult conditions are higher up Mount Kinabalu. Compliments the Dunsan helpers. Worries that it looks as though they have overspent on labour but thinks there will be other savings. No serious illness or injury to report. Had a visit from E J H Berwick, Director of Agriculture in early July, who has helped the expedition considerably.
