TitleCorrespondence between representatives of the Royal Society and Iain Bishop, leader of the Brazilian expedition.
Date5April 1967 - 27 July 1971
DescriptionThe majority of letters in the file are between George Hemmen and Iain Bishop, dating from 1967 and 1968. The letters from Hemmen, pass on important information to Bishop about expedition matters such as the exclusive press contract with Times Ltd., logistical information from the Crown Agents, changes in the expedition committee and updates on the participants expected to join at various stages of the expedition. Hemmen also uses the correspondence to acknowledge receipt of letters and photographs from the expedition as well as to advise Bishop on the record keeping for finances. Letters from Bishop include general reports on the progress of the expedition, as well as more specific letters, including one addressed to D C Martin and Professor Harris where he complains of criticism levelled at the expedition from London. A number of letters refer to the financial situation of the expedition, particuarly later letters where concerns are obviously mounting about balancing the accounts. File includes a hand drawn plan of the base camp.
