TitleCorrespondence between the Royal Society and British Embassy in Brazil
Date5 January 1966 - 9 December 1969
DescriptionIn addition to correspondence with embassy staff, and the British Ambassador, Sir John Russell, the file includes letters to and from staff at the Foreign Office. The letters at the beginning of the file relate to the initial invitation to participate in scientific exploration of central Brazil and the logistics of setting up this expedition including the work of the reconnaissance party. Later letters in the file concern the interest in and press coverage of the expedition in Brazil, general relationships with the Brazilian authorities, arranging visits to base camp by General Lima in 1968, and by a Royal Society delegation, as well as customs restrictions delaying the delivery of expedition equipment. Towards the end of the expedition the content of letters turns to the future of the area and the Royal Society's hopes that Brazilian authorities may see fit to preserve the 20km square investigated by the expedition for further scientific enquiry. The letters end with J G Flynn sending copies of new Brazilian regulations covering foreign expeditions of this nature.
