Description | Correspondence between the Royal Society and various Brazilian institutions including the Central Brazil Foundation, the National Research Council, University of Sau Paulo, University of Brasilia and National Museum. The file also includes letters to and from Government departments, including the Brazilian Embassy in London. The correspondence illustrates that the expedition was keen to have involvement from Brazilian scientists and support from the authorities. The letters focus on logisitics of the expedition from arranging visas for foreign scientists to visit Brazil, to asking for help to ensure the efficient shipping of specimens back to the UK and the formation of a coordinating group which includes Brazilian Institutions (1968), as well as providing ministers with updates on the expedition progress. The later letters in the file also discuss the future of the expedition's base camp and research area, which the Brazilians are to take over in July 1969 and the final letter in this file gives a very brief update on some of the Brazilian members of the expedition. There are occasional items in Portugese in this file. |
