Simon matriculated at the University of Munich in the spring of 1912, attending Ludwig Maximilian University Munich, from April 24th 1912, until March 30th, 1913, and spent the summer term of 1913 at Georg August University, Gottingen.

After being called up for military duty in 1913 and serving with the German Army on the Western Front during the First World War, Simon resumed his studies at the University of Berlin in 1919, and in 1920 started work for his Ph.D under Walther Nernst.
