TitleLetter from Max Born to Simon
Date3 March 1940
DescriptionWritten from Edinburgh

'One of the refugee women under the auspices of my wife's domestic buro, a very reliable person, has received a letter from her sister in Berlin containing the following sentence: [phrase in German] - This Saul is a friend of the family who serves in the German air force. The meaning of the communication is clearly that a big air attack is planned for Easter. This woman has already got other similar messages from her sister cleverly hiding a forbidden information. For instance; [phrase in German] conveying that they do not get any butter or other fat. Though I am convinced that the British intelligence service is well informed I think one ought to give every little piece of information to them. If you have any way of doing so - I have not - please do. But do not send this letter. I am afraid we shall have a jolly lively Easter "holiday". We are making progress in getting the correct formulae for thermodynamics of crystals. I am chiefly interested in the discrepancy between experimental and theoretical breaking strength (factor ?100). Reciprocity is also improving.
Kind regards. '
