Correspondence with Thomson includes a letter (31 October 1939) concerning the pre-Second World War employment at the Cavendish Laboratory of a Dr Oscar Heil from Germany. Heil applied for a post at the Admiralty but disappeared to Germany when the Intelligence Services investigated him. Simon expresses his concern in the letter that this incident has led to the authorities being unwilling to employ German emigres in military offices and laboratories.
