Description | The Notgemeinschaft was founded in 1933 in Zurich by Prof Philip Schwartz, who had fled to Switzerland after being ousted from his position as Professor of Pathology in Frankfurt by Hitler's racial laws. When Schwartz left Zurich to set up a Medical School in Istanbul, Demuth, a former administrator of the College of Commerce in Berlin, became Chairman and moved the office to London. The Society for Protection of Science and Learning found room for it and the two organizations began to work closely together to find placements for Academics removed from their posts in Germany.
The material in the file mostly consists of correspondence between Simon and Demuth, both pre- and post-Second World War. Including a discussion in September 1939 on the ability of Germany (and other nations) to construct an "Uranbomb". The post-war papers include discussion on German scientists Simon viewed as anti-Nazi (he particularly points out Otto Hahn and Max von Laue). |
