Description | Papers on the use of liquid hydrogen as a fuel for aircraft. Simon believed the light weight of liquid hydrogen would be beneficial for long distance flights. It was noted that there would be difficulties in the production of liquid hydrogen and in its storage in aeroplanes.
Simon and Prof Frederick Lindemann (later Lord Cherwell) discussed the idea of using liquid hydrogen in this way prior tho the Second World War, though the majority of papers contained her discuss the development of the idea between 1939 and 1945. The file includes correspondence with Prof VM Goldschmidt, Oslo, on the uses of liquid hydrogen, 1937; with CH Clarke, Lever Brothers Ltd, on the use of liquid hydrogen in industry, 1937-1938; with Dr DR Pye, Air Ministry, on the use of liquid hydrogen in barrage balloons, 1939-1940 with Hary Ricardo, Ricardo & Co, Engineers, on calculations relating to the fuel consumption of aircraft, 1941 and with the British Interplanetary Society on an American article on the handling of liquid hydrogen, 1952.
