Description | Simon's correspondence provides a full account of his dealings with many other fellow scientists and scientific organisations. It gives a detailed commentary on Simon's research work from the 1920s onwards and also illustrates Simon's thinking on contemporary issues.
A major theme of Simon's post-1945 correspondence is the impact of the Second World War on the lives and careers of scientists in both the United Kingdom and Germany. Simon had strong feelings regarding German scientists who he viewed as collaborators with the Nazi Party and the strength of his emotions comes across in his post-war correspondence.
The correspondence has been arranged into the following 5 sections (for more details see the 'Arrangement' field):
Pre-1939 correspondence Post-1939 correspondence Personal correspondence Correspondence with Institutions, Groups and Organisations Correspondence on 'Ideas' |
Extent | 35 boxes |
Format | Manuscript, typescript and printed documents |
Arrangement | Previously, Simon's correspondence was grouped into three numerical sections:
FS/14/1 - pre-1939 correspondence FS/14/2 - post-1939 correspondence FS/14/3 - personal and scientific correpondence formerly at Sir Francis Simon's home in Oxford.
FS/14/1 and FS/14/2 were arranged alphabetically in order of the first significant word in the title; FS/14/3 alphabetically filed by name of correspondent.
The decision was taken to re-arrange the collection, though as the previous groupings were based on a structure mostly imposed by Simon himself it was felt that the collection could not be re-arranged from scratch.
Material from FS/14/1 now makes up FS/5/1 'Pre-1939 correspondence'. This material has been catalogued to file level.
Material from FS/14/2 - specifically the material catalogued as FS/14/2/26 'Correspondence with Fellow Scientists outside the UK' - now forms section FS/5/2, 'Post-1939 correspondence'. This material has been catalogued to item level.
Material from FS/14/3 now forms section FS/5/3, 'Personal correspondence'.
Two other Correspondence sections have been added from papers formerly in sections FS/14/1 and FS/14/2: 'Correspondence with Institutions' (FS/5/4) and 'Correspondence on 'Ideas'' (FS/5/5). |
