TitleObservations of the Satellites of Uranus, by William Lassell
Date1847
DescriptionClean copy of observations of the Satellites of Uranus for September to November 1847, and observations of Mimas, then identified as "an interior satellite" rather than a moon in Lassell's hand. The passage includes reference to John Herschels's nomenclature of the satellites: "Mimas, Enceladus, Tethys, Dione, Rhea, Titan and Lapetus".
Part of these observations were included in the "Observations of the Satellites of Uranus, made with the 20-feet Equatoreal" by Lassell published in the Monthly Notices of the Royal Astronomical Society, Volume 12, Issue 5, March 1852, Pages 152–154. These were verbatim copied from Lassell's journal.
No correspondence between Sir John Herschel and William Lassell is known, but from a letter to George Biddell Airy, we know that Lassell wrote to Herschel in 1848 to report his discovery of the 8th satellite of Saturn.
