Title | Copy of letter, from Sir John Herschel to George Grey, dated at Collingwood |
Creator | John Frederick William Herschel |
Recipient | Grey; George (1812–1898); colonial administrator; writer; explorer; solider |
Date | 27 December 1841 |
Description | Copy of letter, copied as part of the correspondence project led by Colonel John Herschel FRS following the death of his father. GG's book [Journals of Two Expeditions of Discovery in the North-West and Western Australia, 2 vols. (London: Boone, 1841)] is creating a sensation in London. Pleased to learn from it of the range of mountains named after John Frederick William Herschel. Hopes GG will carry out some study into the Aboriginal dialects. Standards of weight and measure should be sent to all Colonies. Important to have a magnetic survey of all colonized and colonizable parts of Australia. |
