Title | Letter from W [William] Whewell, T L [Trinity Lodge, Cambridge], to [Sir John Frederick William] Herschel |
Creator | Whewell; William (1794-1866); British mathematician |
Date | 25 October 1864 |
Description | Whewell sends a few notes on Book 11 [of 'The Iliad'], but they are unimportant. He has noted what appear to him to be prosaic expressions in the translation which are most likely to be criticised. The translation seems to Whewell to be better than the first part, especially the similes. He has not seen Herschel's Book 10 and would like to see it, asking for it to be sent. He does not know how to advise in publishing twelve books. The work would be commanding if the whole was finished, but the remainder is a long job. He would like to see the first half, but notes that the public may be more ready sometime hence. He is grieved to hear about the tenacity of Herschel's bronchitis and asks if he has considered southern climes. Whewell hopes that care and English warmth will suffice. He send regards to Lady Herschel and concludes with line by line comments on Book 11. |
