Title | Letter from W [William] Whewell, T L [Trinity Lodge, Cambridge], to [Sir John Frederick William] Herschel |
Creator | Whewell; William (1794-1866); British mathematician |
Date | 19 November 1864 |
Description | He returns Book 12 [of 'The Iliad'] with annotations. He thinks that he and Herschel concur in standards of hexameter versification, so he finds little that he is not satisfied with. The dialogues of Hector and Polydamus, and Glaucus and Sarpedon, are both very good. He believes that Herschel cannot publish the instalment at the twelfth book ending with the Greeks 'in such evil plight'. Lord Derby's translation is to be published soon, but Whewell does not expect much from it. He gives regards to Herschel's household and hopes that Herschel's cough is better. With line by line comments on Book 12. |
