| Description | He asks Herschel to accept his thanks for sending a copy of his translation of Book 2 of 'The Iliad'. It has as much spirit as the former book, with the same easy flow of metre. He will be more gratified when he has time to compare the translation to the original, not doubting Herschel's adherence to meaning. He calls Herschel's attention to one word which might cause confusion in line 278, 'razer of cities', which could mean builder or destroyer. The latter word would remove all doubt and not damage the metre.The same might apply to line 728. He hopes that Herschel will not think him impertinent. |
