TitleLetter from H [Henry] Jeffreys, Parsonage, to 'Dear Sir' [Sir John Frederick William Herschel]
CreatorJeffreys; Henry Anthony (1810-1898); British clergyman
Date5 March 1862
DescriptionHe is obliged for Herschel's note and half ashamed to give him the trouble of writing it. He accepted Herschel's principles of translation [of 'The Iliad'] and how an extra idea had been added to give the scene more life. But this should stand its own ground and not alter any image intended by the poet. He comments on the lines 'nor raised their eyes', and on the storm darkening the waters. He feels what Herschel has to say about 'desolate' and notes that navigation was imperfectly understood in Homer's day.
