Title | Copy letter from J F W [John Frederick William] Herschel, Collingwood, to Lord [George William] Lyttleton |
Creator | Herschel; Sir; John Frederick William (1792 - 1871); astronomer and mathematician |
Date | 14 October 1867 |
Description | Herschel gives thanks for Lyttleton's further remarks on his verse translations, which will be valuable if the works are reprinted. They date twenty-five years later than the English version [of 'Der Spaziergang']. The first forty or fifty lines were done twenty-five years ago, put aside, and just completed. He was horrified at the false quantity of 'tradit'. He discusses 'sad traps' at the end of pentameters which should be guarded against in school teaching. He gives an example of an ummalleable couplet, then comments on a variety of words and phrases from Lyttleton's critique, concluding that 'all the suggested corrections of punctuation are manifest improvements'. He is flattered that his little production should be thought worthy of such close and accurate criticism. |
