Title | Letter from C [Charles] Pritchard, Clapham, to Sir John [Frederick William Herschel] |
Creator | Pritchard; Charles (1808-1893); British astronomer |
Date | 13 July 1850 |
Description | He has been anxious about Herschel's boy passing his examination with certainty. Pritchard had started to concentrate on his subjects more intensely during the last month before the boy left in a state of health not fitted for study. The boy [William James Herschel] had not set his mind upon his tudies with singleness of purpose. On his return they set to work, but Pritchard found him 'shaky'. Pritchard gives details of their studies in Greek and the gospels. His Euclid and arithmetic were similarly weak. If Pritchard could have him for three weeks he might pass with credit, but he has not the resolution to do it himself. Pritchard ascribes this to his physical weakness in the first quarter of the year. Lady Herschel might impress upon him the consequences of not concentrating his mind. Prutchard is chagrined that Sir John and Lady Herschel are disappointed in the matter, but it will ultimately be for the best and will advance his doings at Haileybury [College]. He would have kept Willey at Clapham, but he is obliged to take a widowed sister and her family to Heidelburg. |
