Title | Letter from John H [Herschel], Camp on the Sutlej, Bhawulpur [Bahawalpur], to 'Dearest Mother' [Margaret Brodie Herschel] |
Creator | Herschel; John (1837-1921); British army officer and astronomer |
Date | 23 March 1861 |
Description | He knows that his mother will be anxious for his letter. The past few days have dragged for him as the past months must have for her [and quoting 'Christabel' by Samuel Taylor Coleridge]. John got the letters sent to Willy [William James Herschel] at the same time as his father's and Bella's written in early January and these have been a comfort to him. He has been in the jungle for six months, seeing the same faces, and he is weary. After a fortnight he will be finished, with a long march ahead, and he will find some relief. His mother will wonder that he is able to write calmly 'in the face of this great blow which has fallen on us all' [the death of Margaret Louisa Herschel?] but he joins in the feeling that all is for the best: 'we have all lost our pet'. |
