TitleLetter from J Kipper, Peshawar, to 'My dear Herschel' [John Herschel]
Date27 November [1859]
DescriptionHe thanks Herschel for news and notes that he made a bad bargain with 'a poor beast' who died. He was sorry to hear of Herschel's seediness, he is also on the sicklist with 'an old Chatham half cured botheration' which has forced him to use a buggy. He asks where Herschel is purposing to march to, with fighting going on. Everyone is full of Meecham's murder [Captain R Meecham of the Bengal Artillery was killed in November 1859]. He wishes he was back with the sappers rather than 'privy building here'. He gives a message for Pat Murray and has had 'a host of old Addiscombe chums' visiting. He has a ram fighting anecdote for Humphrey or his next Roorkee correspondent. He notes a death in which there was suffering from a mass of ulcers.
