Description | He believes that he was in Calcutta [Kolkata] when he last wrote to Herschel. He was ordered to Nagpore last January and it took him thirty days to get there, very slowly after leaving the Great Trunk Road. He gives some travel details, including meeting Howes of the Engineers at Jubulpore [Jabalpur]. He borrowed Howes's horse and rode all the way to Nagpore, along a jungle track 'literally swarming with tigers &c'. He notes friends at Nagpore, including Penny, who is fond of talking about Herschel and his home. He quoted Herschel's father, Sir John Herschel, but only in part and Robertson asks John to complete the phrase. He asks what Herschel thinks of the amalgamation and if he has heard that Moxon and Tommy Gordon are both dead. He is sending the letter to Major Thuillier, not having any idea of how to find Herschel |
