TitleLetter from Frank Robertson, Fort St. George, to 'My dear Johnnie' [John Herschel]
CreatorRobertson; Frank (1838-1873); British army officer
Date16 August 1859
DescriptionRobertson has just been made a Fellow of the Royal Astronomical Society. He knows nothing of the Morlands of Lamberhurst. He has joined others there in setting up a 'loaf', naming his coleagues and his dog, which Herschel will remember from Chatham. He gives news of other acquaintances and he has been fortunate to get the Adjutancy, which gives him a full allowance. If Herschel is likely to be at Roorkee permanently, Robertson will visit him, although he does not intend to stay in the service long. He goes to see Gleig and Straker once a week, but otherwise he considers this to be a miserable place, noting those artillery officers who have left. Bainbridge is on sick leave, while [Henry Ravenshaw] Thuillier was lucky to get under his father [Henry Edward Landor Thuillier]. Robertson had to leave his house at Arcot 'owing to having shot a woman...perfectly unintentional'. Places in the DPW [Dehli Public Works?] are being filled with infantry, due to mismanagement. 'This Chinese affair' will soon give employment to subalterns, he thinks. Roberston will be happy to do anything for Herschel, but he can think of nothing but routines at the moment.
